Babylon the Great, not new Babylon. Babylon the great refers to world-wide false religion, not a specific place or country.

Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylon refers to the first one world government, there have been other "Babylons" since that time, the Medes, Persians and Greeks ( Daniel 7-9). The USA could possibly be one Babylon, but the Babylon in Chapter 18 of Revelation is refering to the Babylon at the time of the end. Maybe the next great kindom that follows the USA in the world events.

Good question. Not a specific country, but to a worldwide religious entity. Why?

Some have identified this symbolic "harlot" (Revelation 17 verses 1-5, etc) with ancient Rome. But Rome was a political power. This harlot commits ‘fornication with the kings of the earth,’ and this evidently includes the kings of Rome. (Her fornication refers to the alliances she has made with the rulers of this earth and explains why she is called “the great harlot.”)

Besides, after her destruction, “the kings of the earth” are said to mourn her passing, "from a distance." Therefore, she cannot be a political power. (Revelation 18:9, 10)

Additionally, since she is mourned also by the world’s merchants, she could not picture big business. (Revelation 18:15, 16)

We read, however, that ‘by her spiritistic practice all the nations were misled.’ (Revelation 18:23) This makes it clear that the great harlot must be a worldwide religious entity. This empire is also described as being actively opposed to true religion, persecuting “prophets” and “holy ones.” (Revelation 18:24) In fact, Babylon the Great has such deep hatred for true religion that she violently persecutes and even murders “the witnesses of Jesus.” (Revelation 17:6) Hence, this woman named Babylon the Great clearly represents the world empire of false religion, which includes all religions that stand in opposition to God.

Hope this helped. Have a good day :-)

Jeffro has the right *idea* – though I do not know that I agree with him completely.

Revelation is *full* of symbolism, and *most* of that symbolism is NOT explained in detail. Assertions that "Babylon the Great" is a particular nation or a particular *anything* (even a "world-wide religion") are based on **sheer conjecture**. There is *no* biblical or extra-biblical support that allows anyone who employs reason to *confidently* identify "Babylon the Great". All such identifications (and there are probably dozens of different ones) are the speculation of preachers or sects – probably most of whom (not all!) are interested in making their followers feel like they know more than other people do.

I have *never* known *anyone* to provide anything even remotely resembling evidence supporting their claim that "Babylon the Great" refers to one particular thing and not any other thing.

I suspect that when the events in Revelation begin to occur, then people will be easily able to recognize Babylon the Great from its description in Revelation. As it is, no thing that we know now fits that description uniquely.
